We’ve all heard “diets don’t work”, but we continue to be bombarded with fad after fad advertisements all over the TV, Internet, and radio and GUESS WHAT? We still buy into them because the idea of lifestyle change sounds too daunting, too demanding, and too overwhelming. The problem is a lot of diets DO work. They just work for a very short time and then it’s back to square one or maybe worse. All this is appealing because it is natural to want instant gratification. It may have taken years or even decades to gain 30, 40, or 50 lbs, but we want to reverse in 30, 40, or 50 days. Sudden and overwhelming change can trigger fundamental survival instincts. Don’t treat lifestyle change like a short-term diet. If you’re throwing back pop tarts and diet coke for breakfast don’t expect just because it’s New Year’s, your birthday, or Monday that you’re going to switch cold turkey to egg white omelets and spinach. Break long-term change down into doable chunks. Focus on immediate steps. Reevaluate what you’ve learned for the week from your focused effort and improve upon that the next week. Repeat until things become habit. Until you’ve gotten comfortable with a certain routine, strategy, or plan that works for YOU. This is called PROGRESSION and as long as you’re making progress you’re getting closer to your goal.
